XT Series Waste Oil Heater Maintenance Schedule
One of the biggest misconceptions about waste oil heaters is that they're difficult to maintain.
The reality is that Lanair XT Series waste oil heaters were designed so routine service can be handled by the people who use them every day. With easy access to key components, OEM maintenance kits, online parts support, and lifetime technical assistance, most maintenance can be completed in-house without specialized equipment.
Like any piece of shop equipment, regular upkeep helps maximize performance and reliability. The good news? Keeping an XT Series heater running strong comes down to three simple maintenance steps.
The XT Series heaters are designed to burn approved fuels including used crankcase oils (5W through 50W), used ATF, and No. 2 fuel oil when properly installed and maintained.
Step 1: Monitor Fuel Quality and Heater Performance
The easiest way to prevent problems is to pay attention to what goes into the heater and how it runs.
XT Series owners should routinely:
- Check fuel tank levels
- Monitor fuel quality
- Verify air pressure settings
- Visually inspect the flame
- Watch for excessive smoke or unusual burner operation
A properly adjusted XT Series burner produces a bright yellow flame that extends approximately three-quarters of the way into the combustion chamber without touching the chamber walls. The ash inside the chamber should appear white to off-white in color.
When a heater is running correctly, heat output stays consistent, startup is smooth, and there is little visible smoke from the chimney.
Step 2: Service the Burner and Fuel Components
The burner is the heart of the heating system.
Throughout the heating season, inspect and clean:
- Fuel strainers
- Air filter/regulator
- Burner nozzle
- Combustion blower components
The XT Series manual recommends replacing the nozzle annually because waste oil contaminants naturally create wear over time.
For most owners, the easiest option is installing an OEM Annual Tune-Up Kit before the heating season begins.

These kits eliminate the guesswork by providing the components commonly replaced during major service intervals.
Step 3: Clean the Combustion Chamber and Heat Exchanger
This is the most important maintenance item on the entire heater.
The XT Series manual recommends removing ash from the combustion chamber and heat exchanger every 750–1000 hours of operation and at the end of each heating season.
Over time, ash accumulates inside the heater and reduces efficiency. If ignored long enough, buildup can contribute to poor performance, shutdowns, and unnecessary wear.
Seasonal cleaning includes:
- Removing ash buildup
- Cleaning heat exchanger passages
- Inspecting the combustion chamber
- Checking the chimney and venting system
The manual specifically notes that insufficient cleaning can lead to reduced efficiency, random shutdowns, and damage to the combustion chamber.
For heaters with extensive burner or chamber wear, Lanair also offers complete replacement packages.

Use OEM Parts. Avoid the Headaches.
The XT Series warranty specifically states that using parts other than those supplied by Lanair can void warranty coverage.
While aftermarket parts may appear similar, waste oil burners depend on precise fuel delivery, ignition performance, and combustion characteristics. Components that are slightly out of specification can lead to:
- Poor ignition
- Increased soot
- Reduced heat output
- Excessive smoke
- Premature component wear
- Unnecessary downtime
Using OEM Lanair parts ensures proper fit, proper performance, and continued reliability.

Maintenance Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
The XT Series was designed for real-world shops, farms, fleet facilities, and industrial buildings where downtime costs money.
Keep clean fuel in the tank. Service the burner regularly. Clean the chamber at the end of the season.
That's the foundation of reliable waste oil heat.
A few hours of maintenance each year helps keep your heater producing dependable heat season after season.
