How does a Waste Oil Heater Work?

It varies depending on building, location of heater, and other factors of your installation environment. The average time falls between 6-8 hours.

Even when installing by yourself, we recommend getting things ‘looked over’ by an HVAC professional. This will ensure your Lanair is running at its best!

Your oil must be pumped to an inside feed tank and must be at least 35º – 40º F. prior to be pumped to the burner.

The oil is preheated to 160º F. in the burner.

It varies by how dirty your fuel is. Tips: Transmission fluid is the cleanest; diesel truck & equipment oil is the dirtiest. The average is 1-2 times per season.

Pre-filter your oil prior to pouring in the tank. ( A mesh screen will help ). Do not mix oil with solvents and parts washer fluid. Do not burn gear lubes. They will cause more maintenance even if mixed with fuel oil. Clean filters monthly. Drain water / antifreeze from tank. Vacuum combustion changer 1-2 times per season.

Annual maintenance according to what your manual instructs is necessary.

Overall, the noise is about the same as a regular fuel oil burner.

* Stay away from gear lubes, they do not burn and will cause you more maintenance for ANY brand waste oil heater.

* There is no UL safety standard for the burning of Used Cooking Oil (vegetable oil) at this time. It should not be burned.

If the Lanair Waste Oil Heater has been installed properly, fuel management has been implemented, and your unit has been maintained according to the manual recommendation, then 10 to 20 years is very common.

Water / Antifreeze will not burn in a Lanair Waste Oil Heater.

Any Water / Antifreeze will have to be drained from your storage tank. Water / Anti-freeze can be siphoned through the ball valve at the bottom of the oil tank.

There are variables that determine how many gallons of waste oil you will burn per day. Variables such as: The outside temperature, the thermostat setting, how often you open and close doors and how well the building is insulated. The BTU output of the heater is also a factor. Waste oil heaters are very efficient. The more they run, the more they save energy costs.

Yes, our Lanair Heaters are EPA approved in the USA so long as you meet the following provisions:

* The Heater burns only used oil that the owner or operator generates or used oil recieved from household do-it-yourself used oil generators.
* The heater is designed to have a maximum capacity of not more than 0.5 million BTU per hour.
* The combustion gases from the heater are vented to the ambient air.

* Note: It is illegal to burn waste oil in California and New York City.

Yes, you can use a Lanair Waste Oil Heater as your only source of heat, however we recommend you keep any pre-existing sources of heat as well.

A common practice is to use a pre-existing heating setup and keep its thermostat down, so it will only kick in as a “backup” to your waste oil heater.

Take note, that using a waste oil heater as the ‘only’ source of heat will depend on both the size of your building and number of waste oil heaters you have. I.E. – you could not rely solely on a 150,000 BTU unit to heat a shop that may require 300,000 BTU for complete coverage.

In most cases, burning your used oil in a Lanair Waste Oil Fired Heater is perfectly legal, however, there are some scenarios where this may not be the case.

* The EPA regulations in America allow on-site burning of waste oil.
* NFPA #21: Oil burning equipment, allows waste oil heaters.
* California and New York City outlaw burning of used oil.
* Check with local fire department and ensure you inform them that units are U.L. listed.
* No waste oil boilers are allowed in Massachusetts.
* New Jersey requires a Permit.

There are several factors that determine the ‘ideal’ heater solution for your building.

Yes, but you will have to restart the heater in the morning. Keep in mind that a thermostat controls the heater’s output, and oil in the building must be between 35 – 40 degrees prior to ignition; To ensure this we recommend lowering thermostat at night to 50 degrees to save on fuel and prevent problems from temperatures dropping too low, then raising it to a ‘comfortable temperature’ in the morning. The pre-heater should be turned off when the heater is not going to be in use for more than 24 hours.

* If you will not using the heater for 6-7 days straight we recommend turning off the pre-heaters all together.

In reference to ‘Used Oil Heaters’ and ‘Waste Oil Heaters’, the terms ‘Used Oil’ and ‘Waste Oil’ are used interchangeably throughout the industry.

In our experience, ‘Waste Oil’ tends to be the more common term when this type of heater is being referred to ‘in the field’, but sometimes the term ‘Used Oil’ is chosen to show that, though it is waste oil, it is still oil ‘oil’ and is not ‘Waste’ but in fact has a ‘Value’ associated with it.

Aside from a purely ‘marketing’ standpoint, there is no difference between these two terms.

An accessory connection kit is provided with every heater purchase. This accessory kit includes several components that are relevant to your installation, such as oil pump, filtration kit, thermostat, etc. The customer will supply the 120V / 60HZ electrical supply and air line from their compressor.

Other considerations include; oil tank, chimney kit and accessories. You can visit with your sales person to determine what is best for your best application.

Waste Oil Heaters are not EPA approved for residential structures. Waste Oil Heaters are EPA approved for use in commercial and industrial building applications. Barns, pole sheds, out buildings and garages are fine as long as they are not attached to the home.

The Lanair Waste Oil Heater was designed with the mechanic in mind, including installation. Therefore, the majority of our customers choose to install the heater themselves. We do provide factory direct technical support, via phone, if you have questions during the installation process. Factory Direct Tech Support is at no charge to our customers for the lifetime of the heater and covers installation, operation and service questions.

Lanair does recommend a licensed HVAC or Mechanical Contractor to verify proper installation prior to using your Lanair Heater. Please check with your local municipality to insure compliance with codes and or permits, where applicable.

Fuel management is one of the key principles to bear in mind when using a waste oil furnace. Waste Oil Heaters are U.L. approved to burn motor oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, diesel and fuel oil. Water and anti-freeze do not burn and separate naturally to the lower part of the oil tank. There is a ball valve at the bottom of the oil tank that allows the customer to siphon off water and anti-freeze. Solvents that are not U.L. approved to burn should not be mixed into your oil.

No – Provided that the heater and the chimney are installed according to the manual. It is also essential to burn approved fuels and to set the correct oil and air pressures.

Most municipal codes will require the waste oil heater to be a minimum of 8 feet from the floor to the bottom of the heater. This is to insure safety when using in an environment that may contain gasoline or paint vapors.

Additional precautions are required when considering a waste oil heater for a body shop. Among these considerations are; approval from your local Fire Marshall, placement of the heater in the shop, and the use of an air makeup ventilation system in your paint booth. These precautions insure a safe application and prevent fisheye while painting.
